String-based Mid-air Fabrication using Acoustic Levitation
String^2 is a proposal for a novel system for 3D rendering and fabrication using acoustically levitated strings. We combine existing ultrasound levitation techniques and resin printer technologies to create a system that has both the benefits of instant renderings in AR technologies and tangibility in existing fabrication systems. We provide ways to construct different 3D shapes with varying degrees of rigidity using line as a unit. We also explore ways that humans can interact with the actuated strings. Through this, we draw a future vision where creating objects instantly and making changes to the object does not come at the cost of losing tangibility.
